PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Plans, supervises, and controls the activities of assigned personnel for efficient, safe and profitable operation under the direction of the general foreman and shop manager. The mechanical shop supervisor is to execute a daily work
schedule with the proper systems and priority for mechanical operations in the shop. The position also ensures that the correct job-related information and facilitates the necessary resources to complete the required tasks. The shop
supervisor enforces plant rules, motivates and mentors direct reports, handles minor personnel issues, monitors scrap/rework/warranty, assists with proposal generation and provides technical expertise to ensure quality/safety on
all projects.
BACKGROUND and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience in the field of turbomachinery repair.
- Minimum of five years’ work experience in manufacturing, repair and assembly of turbomachinery.
- Detailed working knowledge of shop practices, repair, safety, personnel, and administrative procedures.
- Technical ability to make decisions and direct assigned personnel to perform required assignments.
- Excellent supervisory and communication skills
NATURE OF THE JOB
This position exists to direct the daily activities of 5 - 10 mechanics in the tasks of turbomachinery assembly, disassembly, inspection and repair. The mechanical supervisor must control quality/safety/efficiency issues in his/her area of responsibility by motivating, mentoring and monitoring employees. Excellent communication and managerial skills are required to keep each stakeholder informed of developments with individual projects, changes to standard procedures and potential quality/delivery/safety issues. The mechanical supervisor must work closely with other functional areas of the shop including the machining cell and project managers to control production.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
- This position is required to interact with all levels of personnel and departments within the company. The most frequent internal contacts are direct reports, general foreman, shop manager, other supervisors, field service representatives and project managers.
- This position will have frequent customer contact when witnesses are embedded in the shop.
- Travel requirements are minimal (less than 5%).
SUPERVISION
This is a supervisory role with direct responsibility for Shop personnel and for the quality/safety/efficiency of their work. Performance evaluation, training, discipline and motivation of direct reports are all components of the position.
The shop supervisor must lead by example in terms of dependability, integrity, safety focus and technical skill. The incumbent is expected to provide leadership to Shop employees in other disciplines by scheduling their workload in
the absence of the other craft supervisors and by communicating effectively with supervision/hourly employees working other shifts.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES
- Directs, plans, and schedules the shop workload as controlled by customer contract requirements.
- Assures that work is performed in accordance with the specifications and procedures defined in Elliott's Quality
- Manual.
- Advises the General Foreman or Shop Manager of any customer product non- conformances detected in the repair process.
- Assigns the scheduled work and activity on a daily basis to qualified and capable personnel.
- Assures provided work instructions are complete and understood.
- Assures materials, tooling and supplies for the job are available to the assigned personnel.
- Provides consultation and assists in resolving unforeseen problems during manufacturing
- Reviews work assignments for completion and approves completed assignments.
- Orders tools and supplies required for specific jobs.
- Assists with production scheduling, participates in weekly production meetings when required and recommends strategies to correct deviations from schedule.
- Implements, supervises and holds responsibility for good housekeeping activities, safe work practices, effective and efficient operation using established policies and procedures.
- Participates in both formal and informal audits of work practices, expenses and operating efficiencies. Takes corrective actions as required.
- Administers personnel functions in the department including hiring, training, discipline and discharge.
- Actively participates and takes a leadership role in health, safety, environment and quality intiatives.
- Establishes and maintains discipline, effective and productive work habits in the department.
- Communicates effectively to schedule work, shipping and material handling with other departments and shifts.
- Assists with safety and environment audits, customer inspection visits and training activities.
- Maintains a high standard of personal conduct and morale in the department.
- Supports satisfactory work progress by addressing employee technical issues and information requests promptly as well as monitoring all activity throughout the department.
- Maintains a high degree of visibility throughout the day.
- Promotes and adheres to company policies.
- Performs additional activities as assigned by supervision.
