Strategic Purchasing for Primary Health Care (SP4PHC) project, which is a nine-year program supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) that supports countries to improve how funds are allocated to healthcare providers to achieve the goal of universal health coverage.

In Indonesia, the phase two - SP4PHC is working with Ministry of Health (MOH) since the late 2022 on supporting the MOH’s Health Transformation agenda, and specifically focusing on reforms around improving PHC, health financing, and digital health across Indonesia. SP4PHC Indonesia is implementing three workstreams, which aim to support the MOH through at PHC Consortium (Workstream 1), improve how JKN purchases PHC services (Workstream 2), and foster integration of telemedicine into purchasing arrangements for PHC services (Workstream 3).

Under Workstream 1, SP4PHC has been tasked as a coordinator of MOH-lead PHC consortium at 4 selected districts and build a strong collaboration with four reputable universities. This includes the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, Padjadjaran University, and Udayana University. In order to leverage this collaboration, the ThinkWell Institute is keen to open the opportunity for a student internship program with four aforementioned universities (one intern per university). This aims to create a new champions on the primary care issues, mainly from the academic circumstances. This internship will be supervised directly by one of the ThinkWell’s staff with meals and transport allowance provided during the internship period (six months). The program will be based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

SP4PHC-Specific Tasks

Technical Activities:

  • The intern will be expected to learn the overall ongoing activities under the SP4PHC project.
  • Conduct literature reviews related to current evaluations, studies, publications on national health insurance, primary health care, telemedicine, and other topics as required.
  • Assess one most relevant topic by each intern that might be relevant for thesis development.
  • Utilize qualitative and quantitative data from MoH, BPJS-K, and other partners, as needed.
  • Deliver high-quality and timely outputs for deliverables in a written document.

Mini Projects

  • The interns is expected to create a collaborative mini-project that is aimed to show their results during the internship program.

Job Location: This internship is based in ThinkWell Office, Jakarta. (Indonesian Nationals Only)
Reporting lines and teamwork: Senior Medical and Health Financing Specialist

  1. Bachelor or Master student that has completed a minimum of six semesters, respectively;
  2. Firm understanding of the current health system in Indonesia, mainly on the ongoing progression in primary health care transformation;
  3. Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint required; proficiency in statistical analysis packages (e.g. STATA) preferred;
  4. Exceptional analytical, research and problem-solving capabilities;
  5. A thoughtful systems thinker with grounded, pragmatic understanding of the complexities of our work;
  6. Tech savvy and skilled at visual display of data;
  7. Full fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesia;
  8. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to relate respectfully with staff at all levels, ages, genders, nationalities and orientations as well as across work areas.
